In something of an inevitability, the first Instagram-only New York Fashion Week presentation has arrived.
WWD reports that designer Misha Nonoo, who has been recognized by Fashion Group International, the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund and the Woolmark Prize since launching her eponymous label in 2011, will eschew a traditional runway show next month, instead sharing her Spring/Summer 2016 collection via the ever-popular photo sharing platform. Nonoo is currently on vacation, so other details are, at the moment, scant, although a spokesperson did tell Fashionista that the presentation will be referred to as an “Insta-Show” on the Fashion Calendar.
It’s yet another sign of the mutual affection between Instagram and the fashion industry, following the recent hiring of former Lucky EIC Eva Chen in a newly-created role overseeing fashion partnerships, and the publication of a hardcover book consisting entirely of Instagram photos posted by CFDA members. And of course, the fact that virtually every designer, editor, retailer and stylist of note maintains an active account on the app.
As the relevance and usefulness of presenting collections in runway format is debated each season – not to mention the sometimes prohibitive cost to designers – if all goes well, Misha Nonoo’s Insta-Show could set a new precedent for working around the system.
